Years Programme, Learning and teaching, 2018).

Referencias:

Cultivating reflection and metacognition. Nowadays, education focuses on understanding individual needs, strengths and approaches to learning. As educators, we have understood that students learn best when they are engaged and motivated. Active learning is one of the approaches that is used in education to help the students become leaders and take ownership of their learning process.

Active learning approaches are derived from the importance of hands-on, engaging experiences, where students construct their understanding from meaningful participation (Saunders & Wong, 2020). It is closely linked with the interactive principle of John Dewey, who argued that to thrive and reach their full potential, the students need to be

placed in an interactive environment, where they can connect their previous knowledge with the curriculum (Dewey, 1902). He has criticised the traditional classroom setup where a child is inactive and acts only as the recipient of the knowledge (Talebi, 2015). Learning by doing, hands-on learning, among other names, are other ways to communicate the same idea – that we learn best through our own experiences. At Knightsbridge Schools International, we involve our students in the learning through personal inquiries across all subjects, interactions with wider community and regular reflections on their progress.

Active learning is used both with individual learners and with groups (Saunders & Wong, 2020). One of the most successful approaches is providing opportunities for individual reflection. For example, at KSI, reflective journals have shown to be successful with students of all ages. They often lead to discussions about metacognition, or understanding how our thinking processes are and how learning takes place. Studies show that “the best way to develop students’ metacognitive abilities is to teach metacognitive strategies hand-in-hand with the course content” (Cultivating reflection and metacognition, n.d.). This reflection journal brings our students to think about the way they learn, looking for appropriate support and starting to use different approaches to learning, organising their resources, space and time.

Based on personal experience and education, we believe that inquiry-based approach is the most effective active learning. Rather than focusing on reaching the defined final goal, it focuses on true engagement, based on previous knowledge, background, interests and abilities of each student (Primary Years Programme, Learning and teaching, 2018).

Inquiry approach allows our teachers to engage each student and help them develop necessary skills. Whether the learning and reflections are individual or collaborative, the crucial part of learning is genuine interest and involvement of the students in meaningful activities.

References:

Cultivating reflection and metacognition.
